Most of us take good care of the skin on our face, because we see it all year round. Our poor arms and legs can be quite forgotten in the depths of winter!⠀
⠀
The skin on our bodies tends to be dry, flaky and not quite "beach ready" by the time it warms up in Ireland, after months of cosy clothes, inside with the heating blasting. Rough knees, "chicken skin" (keratosis pilaris) on the back of your arms and ingrown hairs can make fake tan a bit tricky to get right too (and it looks like summer 2021 is going to involve as much of the fake stuff as summer 2020 did unfortunately).⠀
⠀
So how can you help your skin all over to be as fresh and glowy as your face by the time shorts weather rolls around? Here are a few tips:⠀
⠀
- COOL DOWN the temperature of your shower. Very hot water strips the skin and dehydrates it so even turning it down a degree or two can help reduce this.⠀
- try and swap in some looser clothing. Most of us are LIVING in our yoga leggings, which tend to be quite restrictive and contribute to ingrown hairs especially on the thighs and bum so give your skin a break with some shorts for your workout as the temperatures become a bit more bearable⠀
- HYDRATE from the inside out. While its always important to drink enough water, you can also add an omega 3 supplement, extra portions of oily fish and flaxseed oil to your diet. Treating yourself to some @skinade in the run up to the summer is also something a lot of our patients do and really notice the hydration of their skin improve all over their body.⠀
- EXFOLIATE. Scrubs are usually a no-no for your face, but some can be good for the knees, feet and elbows to help shift dead skin cells. Another option is to use a moisturiser with lactic acid in it - its a minimal effort option that gives super soft results. Our favourite OTC option is @ameliorateskin transforming body lotion, and Dr Jen advises anyone with keratosis pilaris to add in their exfoliating scrub too.⠀

HYDRATION 💦 ⠀ Are you hydrating your skin cor HYDRATION 💦 ⠀
Are you hydrating your skin correctly?⠀
⠀
- reduce the temperature of your shower, and keep it under 10 minutes if possible to minimise how much it dehydrates your skin.⠀
- skip the very foamy washes and switch your shampoo for something SLS free and kind to skin (remember this washes over all of your skin).⠀
- introduce an actual "hydration" step. Hyaluronic acid is an excellent option, as is thermal water like @avene Eau Thermale.⠀
- maintain your skin barrier. This is essential for preventing water loss from the surface of your skin throughout the day. Sensitive skin or skin that feels tight a lot of the time usually needs some help with the skin barrier and lipid layer and ceramides, fatty acids and lipids are all excellent ingredient to strengthen and maintain your skin barrier. Some great options include @ceraveuki Facial Moisturising lotion, @phformula SOS and @obagi Hydrate & Hydrate Luxe.⠀
- check your environment. Sitting in a dry, warm room with the heating blaring while you WFH (for what feels like for ever at this stage?!)? Introduce a humidifier or a water based oil diffuser to hydrate your environment and reduce the stress put on your skin by dry air. You can also spritz with a hydrating water mist throughout the day too.⠀

Does every skin need a vitamin C serum? NO definitely not! Just like pretty much anything else you put on your skin, you want to consider YOUR skin, what type of skin you have and what exactly is it that is bothering you. ⠀

VIT C IS GREAT FOR:⠀
- brightening skin⠀
- helping maintain an even skin tone⠀
- increasing collagen production (vitamin c is essential for collagen production)⠀
⠀
BUT:⠀
- it can also increase oil production (watch out if you suffer from congestion, and avoid if you have active acne)⠀
- higher strengths can be irritating for skin, so a higher percentage is not always better. 10-15% is the best range for most skin types.⠀
- vitamin c is a relatively unstable molecule, so generally the cheaper products may not actually be absorbed into your skin⠀

Some tips to make sure you're getting the most out of your cleanse:⠀
- choose a cleanser that suits your skin type⠀
- use warm or lukewarm water to ensure you don't strip or dehydrate your skin with hot water (Washing your face AFTER your shower can be a better way to do it and still enjoy a hot shower. Just keep your face out of the main stream of hot water in the shower as much as possible).⠀
- if you are prone to congestion, using a clean flannel or face cloth with your cleanser can be a good option to make sure you're getting a deep cleanse without having to use a very strong foamy wash (which could strip your skin, so you most likely want to skip this kind of wash).⠀
