SKIN CANCER

July is UV Safety Awareness month in the US, but even though we think it’s cloudy and damp here all the time, skin cancer is the most common cancer in Ireland.

About 13,000 cases are diagnosed every year. The majority of these cases are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV), mainly@from sunlight, although UV from artificial sources (e.g. sunbeds) can also cause skin cancer.

So how does this happen when we rarely get lucky enough to see the sun?! Well UV radiation can penetrate through glass and clouds, and the majority of people in Ireland have fair skin which burns easily and tans poorly - so are particularly vulnerable to sun damage and skin cancer.

So please protect your skin, using proper application (and reapplication) of sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, clothing and seeking shade during the hotter parts of the day. And you will also prevent wrinkles and pigmentation - an added bonus⚡️ (remember UV radiation is responsible for 90% of skin aging, so much can look like larger pores, wrinkles, dullness, uneven skin tone and rough skin texture).
